Buying the right electrical cord, or extension cord for your snow blower can be just as important as choosing the right snow blower itself. I say this because if you use the wrong gauge of cord for your unit, you can sometimes run the risk of ruining your unit, of course causing unneeded or unwanted stress. You will undoubtedly want and need a high-quality cord with plenty of length, flexibility in colder temperatures and safe to operate.
The higher the gauge, the thinner the cord. Therefore, for any cord length needed over 50 feet, we strongly suggest the thickest of cords which is the 12 gauge extension cord. Although many don't realize that using a thinner cord can lead to damage, we try to make this very apparent before purchasing your snow blower.
Outdoor extension cords will also come in many different prices and quality for that matter. You will need an extension cord which is built for the extreme temperatures, as well as double-coated to protect against water and other elements. Many of our customers are experiencing extremely cold winters where temperatures easily drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's important that the cord is made for those extreme temperatures. We do not recommend using an indoor extension cord as these are usually 16 gauge or smaller, as well as not water-proof. Many of the cheaper outdoor extension cords will freeze up during the winter and will be virtually impossible to unwind or untangle. Getting an extreme temperature cord will never bind up, kink or be any issue to use even when temperatures get down to those unbearable digits.
Determining the length of extension cord you'll need for your snow blower will have to do with a number of things including: 1. How far away is the nearest outlet to your driveway? 2. How big is your driveway and other areas you plan to use your snow thrower on? Most customers find that the safest length for electrical cord is 75-100'. |
